Anime Cons
AWA 2011: Here’s What I’m Checking Out (And Presenting!)
0AWA is always a panel-packed convention and this year doesn’t really change much! So you really have to think about what panels you want to prioritize going to. Now that the schedule is out, I can figure out what panels I want to go to. You’ll notice in some spots the panels overlap. That means I’ll have to make life-wrenching decisions. Decisions that will change my life forever. But they must be made. I’ve already haven to give up on Unusual Manga Genres, as they are scheduled against my Engrish Jamboree. That’s what happens when a con has too much content!
But I’ve made sure to bold my panels to make sure you know which ones are truly necessary.

So what are my panels?
- Engrish Jambore II – Engrish Haldel: This panel was debuted by Drew and myself AWA last year, and this year I’m returning as a soro to deriver tlue rove for all that rove engrish.
- Anime’s Creepy Uncle – Go Nagai At A Glance: Twitterless Kevin and I gush how awesome Go Nagai is and why you should think he is awesome too. Because you should! He’s awesome.
- Getting Your Anime Groove Back: Think you might be getting out of anime? Well I just might have some shows to get you back in the game, as it were. And is an excuse to show off the first 13 minutes of Redline.
And so there you have it. I’m sure I’ve now somehow skipped over panels that I should have. I’m also sure that during some of these panels I’ll need to eat, or have a sudden inescapable urge to use the dealer’s room and/or restroom. But, these are the panels I want to/will be at. They will all be great. You should go to them.
Especially mine. (I’m so lonely!)
HAMACON MINICON 2010
0
There's a one day anime con tomorrow in Huntsville, I am doing stuff for it. Here are those things:
Anime Fall 2010 Season Overview: There was a bunch of anime that aired this latest season, and some of it’s pretty darn good! Some of it, not so much. This panel is all about that.
Getting you Anime Groove Back: Perhaps you have fallen off the anime train. Maybe Japanese cartoons just aren’t doing it for you anymore. Or it could just be now with so many shows out there, you just have no idea where to start anymore. Or perchance you may a friend going through these same issues. I’m going to try and suggest some shows to help get you back into the anime swing of things, by talking a Reverse Thieves post and turning it into a panel!
Talking About Satoshi Kon: Because GODDAMMIT that guy wasn’t supposed to die yet and still no one that I know who he is and that’s BOGUS. Dude made awesome movies and if you’ve seen anime you probably have seen his stuff at some point and had no clue who was behind it. WELL WONDER NO MORE.
The Pain Train Xpress Holiday Edition: My own take on the Anime Hell-styled clip show full of wacky videos, short films, and what not. This time with a holiday twist.
Also we are doing something a bit wacky with the anime viewing room for the minicon. At most (all) anime cons, the viewing room is a pretty quiet affair. You go in, they are showing anime, you watch some, you leave. For the minicon we decided to experiment somewhat and introduce some interaction into the mix. We’ve set aside some extra time before and after the episodes, and are going to have people that already know and love the shows in question on hand to talk about the show in question. They’ll open up some explanations on the show, who made, what’s cool about it, some things to look for. And them after the show, there will be time to actually chat about what you just saw. It’s kind of like introducing some mild panel elements to the viewing room. Will it work? We have no idea! But, there is only one way to find out.
AWA 2010
0Was a total blast. Finally actually met Gerald from AWO, met up again with Miko after missing each other for like, 3 cons straight, got to hear Dave Merrill tell the world how awesome General Daimos is, and got to talk Tezuka and Giant Killing in equal measure with Ed Chavez. Drew and I had a line for our first panel where we blasted Engrish at people and they didn’t leave, even when at the start it was just audio. Oh and we then talked about Sports Anime and it wasn’t just us in the room! Also I got to see Greggo again which was very cool who also ABUSED, ABUSED his power of being an anime game host host to canvas guests for Dragon Quest IX! The AUDACITY. And that was just Friday! And I’m also leaving out a bunch of stuff I’m sure. Carl Horn showed off a book filled with design ideas from Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise, on how they had 5-6 rejected design ideas for items for every one they used. (Gainax took common household items that we take for granted like spoons and reinterpreted then for the movie’s setting, such that they are instantly familiar but still completely unique. And apparently did this several times for each item!) Mind. Blown.
And how I locked my keys in my car immediately as I park at the Waverly on Thursday night. Although I guess getting the low point out on Thursday was a plus!
But yeah, AWA as always a ton of fun, can’t wait for next year.
So I'm going to Ohayocon…
1Another year, another slew of cons! This year I’m starting early with Ohayocon! Since Nekocon in 2008 Emily DeJesus has bugging me to bring myself and fellow OSMites to Ohayocon at each convention I’ve been to since, culminating into the podcast interview with herself and her husband the amazing artist Robert DeJesus where she told us and the world, “Just fucking go!” at MTAC last year.
So I’m going! As is Kevin, and Brad, at least so far. Of course, it wasn’t good enough to just go, oh no. The sly fox that she is, has hoodwinked us into running some panels as well!
On Saturday at 1PM in Panels 3 (Union D-3) we’ll be hosting the Podcast Jamboree! It will be a panel about podcasting. This is something we’ve done several times before, should be aces.
However on Friday at 4Pm in Panels 6 (Grant/Harding) we’ll be running the panel Tsundere: Why We Love the Ones That Hate Us Most. This will be a look at the popular character archetype, where did it come from, and why it works. This one will most likely have pictures and PowerPoint and snazzy stuff like that. In other words, we have to work at actually making this panel happen, with research and stuff! This is very scary! This will be the first ever “real” panel I have done, so it should be very interesting. If nothing else, it should be fun to watch us crash and burn. And it will give us a real chance to see how the whole thing works which is really good since I’ll be pitching this panel (and more!) to both MTAC and AWA.
Which reminds me, I should email Dave at some point soon.
In other news, my only resolution this year is a simple one. “Write more.” So hopefully this blog will be updated waaaaay more than it is currently. We shall see.
Anime Weekend Atlanta 15
0
So I guess this weekend is AWA! I’ll be running around like crazy!
Hopefully, it’ll be fun!
I’ll be in the Anime Podcasters Roundtable on Saturday, 6:30 – 7:30 PM, Kennesaw Ballroom. You can hear me blab aloud IN PERSON.
James and (the illustrous DJ Inubito) and hid fellow DJ Cynispin along with some other anime fan DJs are passing out 200 copies of their latest CD release, “Renegade Remix Force.” It’s chock-full of anime and video game remixes and I banged my hands at the computer till a cover design came out. Good times!
Whomever is going this year, I’ll see you there!
Twitter and MTAC
0I know several of you on this here LJ Friends list thing have hopped onto the Twitter long before I did. What are y’alls names on it? You can follow me @thebasilfeed. I’ve found that the limit of 140 characters actually makes it easier to post.
Also, after choir I’m heading out will some fellow OSMites to MTAC! I’m hoping it shall be a blast. I’m actually on two panels too! I’ll be a part of the Podcast Roundtable Panel which is being held Friday night at 7:00 PM in the Fan Panel room. Then on Sunday at 1 in Panel Room 2 I’ll be the “token male” in the Shojo Mojo Panel: Feminism in Anime.
The second one could possibly get me in trouble… But I think I can handle it. We might also snag a possible interview or two, and I think we’ll be at least getting one cross-cast with Akihabara Renditions. Should be fun!
PS: This week’s OSMcast was on the awesome DS game Retro Game Challenge. Please check it out if you are so inclined.
OSMcast and MTAC
0So last year myself and intrepid podcast buddies went to MTAC last year, and it was a blast.
This year, the OSMcast is again going to MTAC this year, but this time we’re going to be press. Very awesome.
So I need to know who are going to be my OSMbuddies for this venture. (I’m looking at you: Eric, James, Lee, Kevin, Brad. I’m looking at you.) Also anyone else that wants to go, really. MTAC is April 3rd-5th. While the initial press pass was free, the rest we have to pay for. If we pay by Feb 28th, it’s $35 a head unless we can get 5+ people to go, then it’s $28. Since my press badge is free, I’ll be compensating the OSMcast dudes the diffrence of $35/28 to spread the wealth as it were.
The hotel is apperently book already and they haven’t listed any overflow hotels yet. Todd, you are a wiz at cheaper hotels that are close to cons, do you know of any good places?
So let me know if anyone is interested. This should be a blast.
PS: I may also see about getting some OSMcast Tshirts made.
Man I need to stop being so anti-social online!
0I keep meaning post on LJ, like everyday, then something inside me stops me from doing it. I have no clue why, but that’s okay because I’ve now kicked reason to the curb and am now posting an entry! Hopefully it won’t be the last one for a month! Er anyway…
Hello world!

So AWA happened and it was pretty awesome. I’ve covered most of what happened to me via my podcast, but in short I had a blast and it was great seeing people I only get to see once a year or so. Though sadly I also missed out on a few people I wanted to see but missed, but there’s always next year right?
Somehow ending up on the podcast roundtable was definitely the highlisght of the con for me, though Anime hell was great this year too. Last years while fun was not quite as good as previous years, he totally brought it back around for this year. Also seeing the last bits of the Ouran High School Host Challenege was something that had to seen to be believed. While I can safely say it was Not For Me, for eveyrone there it was very much for them and they looked like they had an amazing time*. But yeah, AWA was fun.
Has anyone out there played Time Hollow for DS yet? It’s kinda like Phoneix Wright meets The Butterfly Effect. It’s pretty fun.
And also on the DS front, I’ve been playing Dragon Quest 4 as of late. Man, as much as people knock the DQ series for never changing, DQ4 is pretty revolutionary in some respects. Maybe I’ll expound on that on a later post because this is starting to get a little long…
*Oh wait, I’m not supposed to say nice things about that anymore. Oops!
