Basil had panels at HAMA4

So this year, as has been the case for the past four years, I have ran panels at Hamacon. Since it’s the one con that has slowly conned (hurr hurr) it’s way into making me a director for it, it tend s to get a bunch from me. However with Hamacon growing and me pilling more and more onto the director plate, it was getting harder and harder  to get panels ready. This year was, theory, supposed to be different. This year we introduced  the idea  of “Featured Panelists,” where we would bring in some of the best panelists we know to help fill up the schedule. For Hamacon 4 we decided to kick it off with the Anime World Order folks, since they do some of the best. And they did a whole bunch for us this year, that we awesome and amazing. Did that end up with me doing less panels, though?

Of course not!

Basil has PANELS at MTAC 2013!

This weekend I’ll be heading out to the Middle Tennessee Anime Convention, or you know, MTAC. As tends to happen nowadays, I’m running panels, and my usual three:

Even More Manga You Need to BUY RIGHT NOW (Friday 10 AM, Fan Panel 2) Manga, the world of Japanese comics. There used to be an absolute ton of these things on the market, but times are changing and not for the better. However, there are still a great many series and one shots that are being published today! And we are going to tell you all about them!

Engrish Jamboree (Friday, 3PM, Panel 2) Rs may not be Ls but when you are speaking English in Japanese the lures go light out the window! The Engrish Jamboree is what happens when you take one language and churn it through another language with hilarious results. Anime and Live-Action clips, music videos, if people are fumbling through English, we got it.

Getting Your Anime Groove Back (Saturday, 9PM, Panel 2) Anime burn out happens all the time. Sometimes life gets in the way and people lose interest in keeping up with the latest shows and news. This panel looks at a few shows that may rekindle that anime fan deep inside that just wants to be free again.

Of course, times for these things can always change.

I’m pretty sure that my ACTUAL description for the Engrish Jamboree is different, but the one I posted is the one I still have an archive for. It is also the description that got complaints sent to AWA for being too racist. I went ahead and made up a new one for MTAC, but came up with it on the fly in the submission form before saving it myself. Whooops!

EDIT: Nope never mind that is in fact the politically correct one I came up with.

Is this thing on¿

OH HEY I have a blog don’t I? I really, really should be making better use of this thing and blog about stuff. I recently did a post for another awesome blog event extravaganza where a bunch of us got together and have been blogging about the first 50 years of anime. Mine was about 1967 and so it was mostly about how awesome Princess Knight and Speed Racer were. Are. Tenses. Who needs them?

Anyway, since I am getting all aboard the blogging train again I should probably start this back up with something I like. So I think I will kick it off tomorrow (later today?) with post about this here video game I just sunk 80+ hours into, Persona 4: Golden.

Manga That You Should Buy Right Now 2012

Manga That You Should Buy Right Now

Here is my 2012 list of Manga That You Should Buy Right Now! I’ve ran this panel throughout the year to the various cons I go to, and people seem to dig it. I tried to make the list pretty varied, with stuff that you can still buy or at least order without paying an arm and a leg. And so far, it has worked! I’ve had a few people track me down at later cons telling me they bought some books. Which is pretty much the biggest complement I can get for a panel like this. I’m already mentally working a new list of manga to tell people about for next year!

So here it is, in no real order (with links to Amazon if you’d like to buy~):

Why should I care about what’s next from a new Xbox?

So I figure, at some point MS finally has to get up off it’s duff and make a new console.

Full disclosure: I cannot play FPSes due to motion sickness. Thanks to the Roadie Run that also takes out Gears. I’m not a realistic racer so no Forza. But that even said, Fable (a series I really like) is currently Kinect fodder along with all of Rare.

So this leads me to my question: Why should I care about what’s next from a new Xbox?

I’m asking because I really am not sure! When the Xbox 360 came out, Microsoft really tried to expand to encompass all kinds of genres. They had to, the new system needed to come out swinging and really cement into the populace that the 360 as The System To Play Games. You had action adventures like Kameo and Fable 2. Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia gave you that JRPG kick that the PS3 at time just couldn’t. Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and Bioshock was originally out for the 360 first and were awesome for those that could play them. Dead Rising was just so NEAT that zombies actually sold me on a system and I hate zombies!

But the 360 has none of that now. Now Nintendo is giving us quirky but awesome games like The Wonderful 101, as well as awesome action games like Bayonetta (Nintendo does what Segcan’t.). And that’s on top of the all the Nintendo games I know I’ll want like new Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, plus all their other franchises. Nintendo also has a habit of at least bringing out a few new ideas every console and handheld generation. A recent example would be Pushmo for the 3DS, it’s one of the best puzzle games in years and it’s completely new and unique to the 3DS. For the Wii, Nintendo came out of nowhere and decided we could really use some RPGs, and trotted out Xenoblade and The Last Story.

That said, while the Wii U is coming soon and it will have pretty good graphics at the moment, the PS4 and the new Xbox will be sure to best it. But while this console generation has had hits from both Sony and Microsoft, most of the studios that Microsoft had at the time of the 360’s launch are not around anymore. Whereas Sony is constantly coming up with new games and series even now. Uncharted, Gravity Rush, The Unfinished Swan, and other games from their Pub Fund as well as internal studios. Where’s that same creativity from Microsoft?

I get why they keep putting off a new Xbox. They have a hot thing right now. It’s still selling great, even though it’s long in the tooth. But publishers want new blood. They are already showing off new games with new engines designed for a more powerful console. But a console is defined by its games, and I’m not sure if Microsoft has those anymore.

Well, besides Halo. They got that.

I just don’t want that.

My dream anime~

So, I had a dream last night.

Now, I don’t really remember most of the dream, but I do remember what happened at the end. Whatever I was dreaming about abruptly ended as I then remembered some old anime I watched back in the day. It was an early 90s OAV, called Drill Knight, I think. I remembering it having drills, roses, castles, modern day cities, and sort of 70s throw back character designs. I’m pretty sure the Drill Knight guy was a cyborg, and his finishing attack had rockets spring out from his back as his sword turned into a drill before he ran the enemy through. Which would then end with a gigantic explosion filled with fire and roses. It was a 6-part OAV, released on VHS from ADV Films, and Kevin and I never finished because we could never find that last tape.

… In retrospect I think this was actually my brain mixing in Giant Robo, Utena, and with a dash of Rocket Knight.

Which really would in fact be my dream anime.

I’m not sure if Viz is a genius, or stupid.

So Viz has decided to take up the 24-hour anime network baton and has begun running it to… some… video game console… that they won’t talk about yet. They call it Neon Alley. It’s not styled like On Demand, like say Netflix or Hulu Plus. No, it is to be much like an actual TV channel, complete with, ahem, “limited” commercials… Even though it’s going to cost you 7 bones a month to subscribe to. It’s also going to have dubbed exclusives, like Tiger and Bunny! Oh! And er, Kekkaishi? Dubbed you say? That’s because it will only feature dubs. None of that high and mighty subtitled Japanese crap on Neon Alley, no sir! And, well…

I have no idea what the hell is going on here. This is either going make VIz and mint or it’s going to crash a burn. I think which of those two options will be determined by who signs on for it.

The Stuff Basil Paneled About at MTAC Omega

Ok folks I always keep promising that I’ll list out everything I panel about at cons… then never do. Soooooo here they are~

Getting Your Anime Groove Back

I have a bunch of anime I throw into a folder and pick out as I’m feeling it. So the line up changes up on occasion. I end up digging into episodes and pulling out bits for a quick overview for each, so you only get 4-5 shows a panel.

Manga That You Should Buy Right Now

This list is set in stone but in no particular order. It’s a PowerPoint-esque thing that works because there’s no video! I’m sure that if I do another panel, I can fill it it in with even more manga though~

That means I’ll have to make life-wrenching decisions. Decisions that will change my life forever.  But they must be made. I’ve already haven to give up on Unusual Manga Genres, as they are scheduled against my Engrish Jamboree. That’s what happens when a con has too much content!

So what are my panels?

    • Engrish Jambore II – Engrish Haldel: This panel was debuted by Drew and myself AWA last year, and this year I’m returning as a soro to deriver tlue rove for all that rove engrish.
    • Anime’s Creepy Uncle – Go Nagai At A Glance: Twitterless Kevin and I gush how awesome Go Nagai is and why you should think he is awesome too. Because you should! He’s awesome.
    • Getting Your Anime Groove Back: Think you might be getting out of anime? Well I just might have some shows to get you back in the game, as it were. And is an excuse to show off the first 13 minutes of Redline.

And so there you have it. I’m sure I’ve now somehow skipped over panels that I should have. I’m also sure that during some of these panels I’ll need to eat, or have a sudden inescapable urge to use the dealer’s room and/or restroom. But, these are the panels I want to/will be at. They will all be great. You should go to them.

Especially mine. (I’m so lonely!)

The Summer of Anime in 2011

So a new season of anime is upon us, which means that the airwaves of Japan and the computer monitors of everywhere else are going to be flooded with of ton of moe-crap shows and couple of series that are actually watchable. Thankfully, you have somehow stumbled upon my blog post here so that I can make snap judgement about the entire season without having yet to watch a single thing, and then decided to write about what looks remotely interesting with incredible run on sentences that go on too long for my own good. First things first! Here’s a link to one of those handy dandy giganto-lists where someone goes on Moonphase and complies a a nice big list with pictures and everything so I don’t have to. That was sure nice of them! Let’s get to it.
